November 2010 - Basuqueros, Plaza de Toros - Bogota, Colombia |
"Basuco" or cocaine base is an easy to produce half-product of cocaine. It is actually the alcaloid that is extracted from the coca leaves using kerosine (preferably), thereby reducing the volume of the leaves by 99.9% and making it easy to transport to the laboratories. It is also a cheap and highly addictive drug that is widely used by homeless people. In order to not use too much at a time (one needs a 'hit' about every 15 minutes) it is diluted with powdered brick. That is why at places where many basuqueros live, like around the Bull Ring in the centre of Bogota, you find walls full of hollowed out bricks. Best regards, Niels
