May 2004 - Domino players, Curacao, Dutch Antilles |
Playing dominoes is a popular pastime in Colombian coastal cities. The Dutch Antilles are part of The Netherlands, although they are situated on the other side of the world, in the Caribbean Sea at the Venezuelan and Colombian coastline. Wealthy Dutch still have their second or third houses here, and in schools Dutch is still the official language. However among the population the spoken language is mainly Spanish. Actually the population itself is becoming more and more South American. As more Antillians move to The Netherlands, more Colombians seem to move to the Antilles. Like the domino players portrayed here. Not surprising given the relative economic prosperity of the islands. The surprising part is that these islands never became part of the mainland that it seems they should belong to. And the fact that you buy Dutch cheese, milk and tomatoes in the supermarket. If you want you can have Venezuelan beer, too. Imported from New York. At 15 times the price you´d pay on the other shore, 20 miles away. If you could get there...

or the city I'm in. Or a snapshot of my girlfriend. The only criterium
it has to meet is that it was made in the last month. And that I believe
it is worth bothering you with...
