October 2006 - Arhuaco Indian village, Colombia |
Living near the Colombian Caribbean coast in the almost impenetrable Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the Arhuaco indians were not discovered and therefore not extinct by the Spanish colonists. A few decades ago the Colombian government built a road that lead to their lands, but the tropical climate destroyed the road in a matter of years. The Arhuaco never allowed another road to be constructed to make sure people that have no business there do not arrive. It takes 6 hours from the closest town by foot or mule, or a 4x4 with a very experienced driver and shovels, to get to the village of Nabusimake, the Arhuaco capital. However the trip is worth the effort as it undoubtedly is Colombia's most beautiful village. Don't expect to get a warm reception, though, as Westerners still have a real bad reputation with the Arhuaco.
Other Photos
of the Month:
The
'photo of the month' is not meant as something pretentious, it is not
even chosen by any jury. It could be an advertising photo I did, or a
photo for a magazine or record cover. Something telling you of a journey
I made or the city I'm in. Or a snapshot of my girlfriend. The only criterium
it has to meet is that it was made in the last month. And that I believe
it is worth bothering you with... |
