May 2006 - Sailors, Gorgona, Colombia |
Quite an amazing scene we witnessed as we took a boat to the island of Gorgona, about 9 hours off the Colombian Pacific coast. These guys managed to carry logs of over 300 pounds each off the boat over a 4 inch wide ledge, with a blazing speed. Gorgona itself, situated little north of the Galapagos islands but with none of the Galapagos' tourism (or prices), never ceases to amaze either. In one afternoon you can see groups of thousands of barracudas and tunafish, giant sea turtles, sharks, 10 foot wide manta rays, groups of playing dolphins and whole families of humpback whales. Without even starting to mention the animals on the island, or the rainforest prison (one of the world's fiercest) closed only 20 years ago. Without a doubt one of the most amazing spots on the globe, and with a maximum of 50 visitors at a time let's hope it stays that way... Best, Niels
Other Photos
of the Month:
The
'photo of the month' is not meant as something pretentious, it is not
even chosen by any jury. It could be an advertising photo I did, or a
photo for a magazine or record cover. Something telling you of a journey
I made or the city I'm in. Or a snapshot of my girlfriend. The only criterium
it has to meet is that it was made in the last month. And that I believe
it is worth bothering you with... |
