February 2006 - Nukak Maku, Guaviare, Colombia |
In 1989 the Nukak Maku tribe came out of the vast rainforests of the Amazon basin for their first contact with the Western world. After being world news for a little while, attention faded and they went back to their habitat and nomadic lifestyle. Because of flu and violence, at this moment only 380 Nukak Maku are estimated to still be alive and their numbers are fading fast. More than half of them are living in overcrowded refugee camps without basic needs like drinking water. Because of the 'War on Drugs' coca farmers forced away from their grounds are cutting down the rainforests in which the Nukak Maku used to live, and the guerilla is claiming their land. I am trying to get an article published on this issue wherever possible, in order to raise some international attention. The article and photos can be found here: Any help or tips to get the article published or to get assistance of non-governmental organizations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Niels
Other Photos of the Month: PHOTO OF THE MONTH SITE

I made or the city I'm in. Or a snapshot of my girlfriend. The only criterium
it has to meet is that it was made in the last month. And that I believe
it is worth bothering you with... |
